DRUDGE: SANTORUM’S SATAN WARNING

Is Drudge obsessed with Santorum as Christian? He’s bestowing lots of scary headlines on him, this one about a four-year-old statement. Why is Drudge so alarmed? In any case, he’s losing me.

I’m a little discouraged myself. Not that I don’t think Mr. Santorum wouldn’t take a nasty beating by the Chicago Machine behind the prez’ re-election campaign, but “drudging” up old statements from four years ago seemingly meant to scare the daylights out of the Right is disappointing at best. Romney will be an OK candidate and ultimately president, but I don’t need him to get there via a Santorum barbeque…

I don’t think it’s exactly personal with Drudge. It’s all about hits and dollars and making hay …. Obama is going to go all out to defeat Romney in Michigan. Thinks Santorum will then be a push-over because the Right will fear to back him. Ultimately I think not. We have a little giant in our midst.

Hits etc. yes, but playing to what readership? Anyhow Drudge is an actor, not a reactor, has been for a long time.

He has friends in high places who are supporters of Romney. Aims for readers desperately seeking reasons to feel good about Mr. R’s chances. Gives them mud they can believe in. That’s what readership.

Secularists. It’s where left meets right.

Hmmm … secularists meet . NFOG … no fear of God. I think you are right. . . .Do I understand correctly from your earlier comment that reporters ought to be reactors, not actors ? Sounds right to me, but the temptation to become part of the story must be great.

Damn right, and to be resisted.

May I amend my previous remark. I wasn’t saying what Drudge ought to be, but noting his role in the stream of event reporting etc. He’s a news maker, as we speak of market makers in stocks etc. His picking and choosing, including headlining of what’s buried in other stories, decides what’s news. He’s a news editor, not a reporter, and editors decide what’s news, too often based on what AP or NY Times have or Wash Post, etc. The big guys. The reporter, on the other hand, though also a decider as he writes his story, picking and choosing what’s important including colorful details but mostly placement and organization of his story, is supposed to keep himself out of it. He should be fair and balanced by his best lights, and the more I talk about it, the more complicated it gets. In any case, detachment, not giving a shit just getting the story out, is the reporter’s goal, as mine right now is to stop and say no more.
