Emerson on what’s politically of supreme importance

RW Emerson on “Monday in the mall”:

“We grant no dukedoms to the few,
We hold like rights and shall;
Equal on Sunday in the pew,
On Monday in the mall. [italics added]
For what avail the plough or sail,
Or land, or life, if freedom fail?”

In other words, what ere the grand presidential, congressional, or agency plan for the betterment of “humankind,” so what, “if freedom fail”?
